Deliberate Training, The Compound Effect + 4 Factors of AYG

7/28/2015

So we know that deliberate training is a HUGE advantage to boost your results and separate you from those who only focus on training what they’re already good at, or repeating the same old stuff. Rock out your training sessions with active engagement, full of intention and in a goal-oriented manner.

Focus on getting 1% better each day. That is how your game will reach the next level. That's the "Compound Effect," and as Darren Hardy puts it in his great book with that exact title:

“The Compound Effect is the principle of reaping huge rewards from a series of small, smart choices. What’s most interesting about this process to me is that, even though the results are massive, the steps, in the moment, don’t feel significant. Whether you’re using this strategy for improving your health, relationships, finances, [SOCCER TRAINING!] or anything else for that matter, the changes are so subtle, they’re almost imperceptible. These small changes offer little or no immediate result, no big win, no obvious I-told-you-so payoff. So why bother?

Most people get tripped up by the simplicity of the Compound Effect. ... What they don’t realize is that these small, seemingly insignificant steps completed consistently over time will create a  radical difference.

Why couldn't they talk about compound interest like this in school? I'd me more likely to listen!

Not a lot of people get that. and they just try and fit it all in in one session every once and a while... it's not very efficient

You're absolutely right, Sam!

If you want to build or develop something, you've got to work on those incremental, consistent changes. Then in the long run, you will see drastic results.

Besides, you don't want to be a hero in the beginning and end up screwing yourself over from burnout, or lack of interest in what you're doing. Making the committment and having the discipline to work day by day, week by week, will yield unbelievable results!

Thanks for that Sam!

Does this contradict Matt's idea of training extra at all?

Great question Los! Thanks for asking.

So for those who aren't familiar with Matt's idea on training, here it is:
https://mattdanaher22.wordpress.com/2015/06/12/why-doing-extra-is-actually-hurting-your-player-development/#comments

In short, my man Matt believes that extra training = highway to injury

What do I think of this? I completely agree!

There is definitely a limit to the amount of training that one can do week in and week out in a safe and effective way. Later, I'll point out what I understand is the most optimal way to train within that boundary.

Keep in mind that at the Amateur level, clubs may not train nearly as much or as efficiently as professional (and Youth Academy) clubs. Therefore, I believe there will be a way to effectively train, and still integrate proper rest times. Especially if training technical skills at sub-maximal exertion levels.

Having a "1% better" mindset applies to your overall improvement.

Monday's 1% could be Technical, Wednesday's 1% may be football fitness, Thursdays 1% would be rest. With the training system that I'm putting together, you'll be able to train efficiently, and that 1% will add up! :)

A quick P.S. on this, please vary your training up! Burnout is real, and if you strictly stick to the same routine, you're itching for a pulled hammy!

Hey zak do you think that this training will be affect ones confidence in a positive or negative way? I believe that every time you touch a ball your confidence gets a huge boosy. Also do you believe it wise to train with a friend? I think it is a good idea to bring a friend if he is taking the matter seriously, this way you have more drills to run.

Also some great questions, Justin!

Confidence eh?

Hmm.. well as scientists like to explain confidence, it's about self-efficacy; your belief that you can succeed in a situation. This, without a doubt, has an affect on how you play.

The best way to cultivate football confidence is through mastery. Master yourself mentally to trust yourself; Master your physiology to be in-tune with your body; & Master your Craft (football).

In order to Master your Craft, you need to put the work in. It's simple, put in the time to get good at what you want to do. Day after day, it will compound.

How do you master your craft? Here's the first step: know what your KEY AREAS** that you want to improve are. By knowing that, you'll be able to take the steps needed to cultivate confidence.

**HINT: Technical Ability, Tactical Intelligence, Football Fitness, & Mental Toughness are your key areas!**

And as far as training with a like-minded friend, that is a great idea! It helps with accountability, motivation, and it will definitely create more training opportunities like 1v1's, partner drills, etc.
